Homeschool Guitar Lessons Your Kids Will Love

Technically no, you can learn the guitar with just a guitar. However, there are some common accessories that come in handy as students build skills and learn more. All our guitar bundles come with the following accessories:

• Tuner - Helps you tune your guitar strings. We have a tuner built into our app. This stand-alone tuner attached to the headstock is also very handy.
• Guitar Picks - Not required to start (we advise to start with thumb strumming) but common when students learn how to strum and flat pick
• Strap - Makes it easier to play standing up

Some other accessories you may want in the future:

• Capo - Allows you to play songs in different keys using the same finger positions (called transposition)
• Guitar Stand - Makes it easy to prop the guitar up in the corner of the room
• Wall Hook - Easily hang your guitar on the wall (which looks super cool too)
• Guitar Bag - Soft or hard bags keep the guitar protected, especially when traveling or on the go. 

We've found that 7 - 8 year olds is the earliest to start learning guitar as they have sufficient coordination, arm strength, and attention span to practice and play songs. For younger students (ages 5+), we recommend starting with ukulele. Finger positions, chords, and strumming patterns learned on the ukulele translate directly to guitar when they get bigger. 

Learning guitar, or any instrument for that matter, could be a lifelong endeavor if you want it to be. The learning never stops when you have a passion for music. Here is a quick rule of thumb for students that use our self-paced program (or take live lessons) and practice 2 - 3 time per week:

• 2 - 3 Weeks: Learn your first few chords, chord progressions, and play some simple songs you love.
• 1 - 2 Months: Know all the basic chords and can play 5 - 10 songs all the way through.
• 2 - 4 Months: Learned some strumming patterns, can play barred chords. Play 20+ songs. Playing faster tempo songs.
• 4 - 6 Months: Learned flat picking, can play melodies, riffs, and scales. Combining picking and strumming. Can sing and playing at the same time.
• 6 Months - 1 Year: More complex songs, finger picking, improvising / soloing, playing with others. Can play hundreds of songs.

After about 4 months, students tend to pick a guitar path that most interests them (rhythm guitar to play songs, lead guitar to solo, start a band and play with others, write songs, finger picking style, play guitar to suppor their singing). We identify this journey with students and support them with personalized instruction depending on their musical path.
