California Prop 28 just passed setting aside nearly $1B for arts and music funding for California K12 public schools. This is a giant step in supporting critical music programs that are so important for many low-income districts and schools. Prop 28 requires each district to devote 1 percent of the previous years budget to arts and music programs.
Prop 28 requires at least 80 percent of the funding be used to hire staff. The remaining Prop 28 funding could be used for training, supplies and materials, and for arts educational partnership programs.
The measure passed 62% to 38%. Musicians such as Christina Aguilera, Barbra Streisand, Katy Perry, Graham Nash, Lenny Kravitz, and Earth Wind & Fire have supported the bill through donations or endorsements.
