Homeschool Ukulele Lessons Your Kids Will Love

Not really, ukuleles are designed to play with just your fingers becuase they have easy-to-play nylon strings. Our uke bundles come with a clip-on tuner, picks, and a strap. Here are some additional items you may want, but are certainly not necessary:

• Stand - Small metal stand to put the uke on that fits nicely in the corner of a room
• Wall Hook - Allows you to hang your uke on the wall (which looks great too!)
• Uke Capo - Allows you to play songs in different keys using the same finger positions. 

Ukulele is perfect for young, small kids. While 4 year olds can start strumming open strings and building a sense of rhythm, we recommend lessons start at 5 years old, when kids can play the C chord (just 1 finger) and start to pluck some strings. By 6 years old, kids tend to have the finger and arm strength to learn all the basic chords and play a bunch of songs. Independent of age, the best indication of when to start ukulele lessons is 1 - Kids that have the ability to pay attention, sit still, and follow direction for 5 - 10 minutes, 2 - Kids that have long enough fingers to fret the strings and make chords, and 3 - Kids with enough coordination to hold the uke with one hand and strum with the other.

Learning ukulele, or any instrument for that matter, could be a lifelong endeavor if you want it to be. The learning never stops when you have a passion for music. Here is a quick rule of thumb for students that use our self-paced program (or take live lessons) and practice 2 - 3 times per week:

• 3 - 4 Weeks: Learn string names, play 3 chords, and play a few simple songs.
• 1 - 2 Months: Know all the basic chords, can play 5 - 10 songs all the way through.
• 2 - 4 Months: Learned basic and barred chords, can play 20+ songs, learned a variety of strumming patterns, can play a few melodies.
• 4 - 6 Months: Can play complex songs, learned faster melodies, learned a variety of scales, better at playing in time. Can sing and play at the same time. Learned fingerpicking.
• 6 Months - 1 Year: Can play hundreds of songs. Adept at playing with others. Can write their own songs. Can mix between playing chords and flatpicking.

After about 3 - 4 months, students tend to pick an ukulele path that most interests them (playing songs, playing melodies, writing songs, finger picking, graduating to guitar...etc.). We identify this journey with students and support them with personalized instruction depending on their musical path.

Ukulele is a perfect onramp for guitar becuase the chord fingers position placements translate exactly to guitar. After about 6 months of lessons, especially for 7+ year olds who have matured physically, we see students switch over to guitar instruction to continue their musical journey.

Moosiko is approved in many state ESA/EFA (school voucher) programs. These programs use ClassWallet or Odyssey (FL has their own homegrown platform) to manage student funds, vendor offerings, and payments.
